Carrying of bicycles on board trains is dependent on space and the discretion of on board staff. Avoid travelling with bicycles at peak times, as space will be limited. Bikes cannot be carried on rail buses where buses replace trains due to construction works.

Train penalty fare

You must pay to travel on trains. Auckland trains operate on a pre-pay system. You need to have tagged on AT HOP Card or a valid ticket before boarding trains or you will be required to pay a penalty fare.

The penalty fare is the penalty for not pre-purchasing a ticket or failing to tag on an AT HOP card before boarding the train.

The penalty fare costs $20 and applies regardless of the length of your journey.

To be fair for all, Auckland's rail system requires everyone to pay their way to ensure we can continue to invest in improving trains, stations and services.

Single train tickets can be purchased from ticket & top-up machines at all stations and from ticket offices.

The AT HOP card can be purchased for $10 from ticket offices at Britomart, Newmarket, New Lynn and Papakura train stations and from ticket inspectors during ticket checks. Money can also be loaded onto the AT HOP card online at ATHOP.co.nz and at ticket & top-up machines at all train stations.

If you have received a penalty fare and want to question it please contact Auckland Transport using the contact details here.
